For decades, 3M has been quietly changing the way OEMs manage noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) in their vehicle designs. Many of our vibration damping tapes feature a pressure sensitive, viscoelastic acrylic polymer adhesive applied to a restraining layer, such as aluminum foil, that combine to achieve effective damping with as little as 20% surface coverage. This construction allows designers a broad ability to control resonant vibrations, and performs across a wide spectrum of temperatures.

There are a number of components both inside and outside cars and appliances that can be used to control vibration and insulate against noise harshness. 3M absorption material simplifies noise reduction in accordance with manufacturer requirements, since it insulates very effectively. In addition to using acoustic insulation to absorb noises in the vehicle, 3M offers special films for the damping of vibrations and noises in lightweight materials.

Thinsulate™ AU Series
Features a combination of microfibers that absorbs higher frequencies, making it ideal for interior and exterior applications such as door panels, headliners, instrument panels, package trays, pillars, and trunk liners. It may be evaluated for use in carpet/dashmat, under body, in wheel wells and other variable cavities. Much of the AU Series features a double black scrim, which adds structural integrity and helps create more desirable aesthetics in areas where the installed material may be partially visible.
Thinsulate™ HT Series
Designed for use in engine-side and high-temperature applications. This heat-stable fiber insulation resists temperatures of 150°C for 336 hours or 180°C for 48 hours, outperforming PU foams and is excellent for meeting engine compartment noise reduction requirements. A durable black scrim resists fluids, helping maintain noise-reduction performance over time. This product passes FMVSS302 testing for horizontal flammability resistance.
Thinsulate™ SM Series
Very high performance in any thickness and weight. This non-woven mat delivers excellent sound absorbing properties for a full range of automotive applications – door panels, instrument panels, pillar trim, package trays, wheel arch liners and more. It is compressible, non-linting, lightweight, and can be easily die-cut. A black polyolefin scrim on one side protects the fibers.
Thinsulate™ TAI Series
Great for tight spaces, this non-woven mat features excellent sound absorbing properties even in very thin dimensions. It is compressible and non-linting, and its light weight makes it especially suitable for vertical applications. The TAI Series is excellent for acoustic treatments inside instrument panels, pillar trim and package trays.
Thinsulate™ TC Series
Features high loft, low density and excellent compressibility in a wide range of thicknesses. It is ideal for optimal cavity filling in pillars, behind door trim and body side trim panels, in headliners and behind instrument panels, especially in designs where mass reduction is a major consideration.
Thinsulate™ TH Series
This material features an airflow-resistant performance scrim that delivers increased acoustic benefits at low- and mid-frequency ranges without adding thickness. This series is excellent for NVH addressing acoustic concerns from 500hz -2000hz range in small spaces.
